چکیده

Researchers had been divided over whether the sound was vocal or not, but the latest study, published online in the Royal Society Proceedings B shows unequivocally that the tail feathers were the source of the sound. When the researchers cut back the tail feathers — which grow back in five weeks and do not affect the birds ability to fly — the males were unable to make the noise. Tests in wind tunnels confirmed that the vanes of the feathers vibrated at the right frequency to make the sound when exposed to air currents of 80 km/h. Research will now turn to other species that have tail feathers with tapered or narrow tips and that have mating dives and make different sounds. “It is possible that sexual preference by females has caused the shape of the tail feathers and, thus, the sound, to diverge, thereby driving the evolution of new species,” says Clark. Non-vocal mechanisms, such as this tail feather mechanism, “enhance the diversity of sounds birds can produce,” the authors say. “Small birds may be limited in their ability to produce loud vocal sounds by the size of their syrinx. The dive sound of the Anna’s hummingbird is much louder than its song,” they write. “This suggests that switching to feather sonations has allowed it to escape the intrinsic constraints on vocal sound volume. In the bee hummingbird clade many related species perform dives, have specific tail morphologies and make a diverse array of sounds,” the authors write. They point out that this is also true of snipes. “We predict that in these clades, dive behaviours and tail morphology have coevolved to produce a diversity of mechanical sounds.”

Influence of motivation on behaviour in the hermit crab, Pagurus samuelis

Both the need for shelter and the need for food can be motivations that alter animal behaviour. We tested the hypothesis that the hermit crab, Pagurus samuelis, deprived of food, shells, or both will respond differently from control hermit crabs when presented with food and shells concurrently. We measured the number of contacts made with both food and shells, and time elapsed until hermit crab...

Effects of shell fit on the biology of the hermit crab Pagurus longicarpus (Say)

Most hermit crabs have a specialized lifestyle that requires them to occupy gastropod shells. The size of shells that hermit crabs inhabit relative to their body size affects their growth, survival and fecundity. In this study, the effects of shell fit on individual growth rate, risk of predation, feeding rate, and activity level were examined in the laboratory for hermit crabs Pagurus longicar...

A forced association between the slippersnail Crepidula convexa and the hermit crab Pagurus longicarpus?—possible influence from a third party

The suspension-feeding slippersnail Crepidula convexa is commonly associated with hermit crabs (Pagurus longicarpus) living in periwinkle shells (Littorina littorea) at our study site in Nahant, MA, USA. In 15 field surveys conducted at Nahant in 2000, 2001 and 2003, we found that (1) more than 61.8% of individuals of C. convexa resided on shells occupied by hermit crabs, as opposed to the shel...

Avoidance of drilled gastropod shells by the hermit crab Pagurus longicarpus at Nahant, Massachusetts.

Most hermit crabs depend on empty gastropod shells for shelter; competition for appropriate shells is often severe. This study determined whether shells that have been drilled by naticid gastropods are suitable for occupancy by the hermit crab Pagurus longicarpus. Differences in the characteristics of empty shells and those occupied by hermit crabs were assessed at two adjacent field sites in N...

The Probable Method of Fertilization in Terrestrial Hermit Crabs Based on a Comparative Study of Spermatophores

ALTHOUGH the physiological and mechanical phenomena of the vasa deferentia resulting in the elaboration of the spermatophores of marine hermit crabs (Pagurida) have been investigated (Mouchet, 1931; Matthews, 1953), these phenomena in terrestrial hermit crabs (Coenobita and Birgus) have been neglected. Spermatophores of marine hermits are made with precision; the so-called immutable form of the...

Low richness of hermit crabs community (Crustacea: Decapoda: Paguroidea) and high dominance of Clibanarius signatus in the intertidal zones of Larak Island, Persian Gulf, Iran

Abstract Hermit crabs community in the intertidal zones of Larak Island were investigated through a seasonal sampling at five stations using random quadrate sampling method. Overall, seven species were identified and Clibanarius signatus was the dominant species, which showed high dominance over other species. Using Bray-Curtis cluster analysis for comparing seasonal abundance showed that exce...
